The University of Kentucky Graduate School maintains minimum admission standards that all applicants must meet; programs may set additional requirements but may not waive or lower the Graduate School’s baseline criteria. All applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. or recognized foreign institution. A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 and graduate GPA of 3.00 is required. Official transcripts must be submitted from all previously attended institutions.

GRE scores are generally no longer required by the Graduate School as of Fall 2024, though individual programs may still require them. Additional requirements apply to international applicants, including proof of English proficiency, financial certification, and health screenings upon arrival. Letters of Recommendation

The Letter of Recommendation form asks recommenders to rate the applicant on key qualities such as:

Analytical Ability, Research Skills, Initiative, Persistence, Written and Oral Communication, Interpersonal Skills, and Creativity.

Each trait is rated on a scale ranging from Top 2% to Below 50%, with an option for "Unable to Judge."

Recommenders are also asked to:

Indicate how likely they would be to hire or accept the applicant into a similar program at their own institution.
Specify the group of students they are using for comparison.
Describe how long and in what capacity they have known the applicant.
Highlight the applicant’s strengths, and identify any weaknesses or areas for improvement.

Recommenders may also upload a separate letter.

Domestic Deadlines

The Graduate School’s application deadline for domestic applicants is one month prior to the start of the intended semester of entry.

Note: If a program sets an earlier deadline than this, the program’s deadline takes precedence.

International Deadlines (Not applicable to online programs)

Application deadlines for international students are as follows:

Fall Admission: April 15
Spring Admission: September 15
*Summer Admission: January 15
*Summer admission is limited to select, pre-approved programs only.

Most programs do not admit international students for the summer term.

Important: If a domestic application deadline is earlier than the international deadline, the earlier domestic deadline overrides the international one.

Program Considerations for Deadlines

Graduate programs should carefully consider the application window available to prospective students:

Programs control the application close date, but not the open date.
Closing the application too early may result in an unreasonably short window for applicants to apply.

Application Opening Dates:

Fall and Summer terms: Applications open September 1
Spring term: Applications open January 15

Programs are encouraged to align their close dates to ensure a reasonable and accessible application window for prospective students.
